Argentinean Airline Now Offers Tickets As NFTs Using Algorand

It looks like the possible use cases for the Algorand ecosystem continues to expand as the blockchain is now able to create NFTs that are used as airline tickets.

Flybondi, an Argentinean airline, just revealed that it has become the first airline within the country to launch airline tickets as Algorand NFTs.

Essentially, tickets that are purchased online on the company’s website are delivered as an NFTs and this unlocks a whole new set of possibilities when it comes to airline tickets.

For example, it is now extremely easy to transfer ownership of the ticket to another person which is something that is extremely difficult to do with traditional airline tickets.

It is possible that many other airlines might decide to do the same thing depending on the success of this new initiative.

CryptoPotato reports:

The company announced on its website that each purchased ticket will be issued as an NFT on the Algorand blockchain. The integration is an expansion of Flybondi’s existing partnership with TravelX.

Ticket 3.0 enables customers to change the name on the pass, give it away, or transfer it to another individual. As such, it removes the usual hurdles when one tries to change the ownership. Commenting on the development, CEO Mauricio Sana said:

“With Ticket 3.0, our passengers will have greater flexibility and control over their trips because they will be able to transfer, rename or give away their tickets in a simple and autonomous way.

With this launch, we seek to generate a positive impact in the aviation industry through innovation and an application of blockchain technology. Changing the rules of the game is never easy, but we know that it is our objective to evolve and offer our passengers a new stage of the freedom to fly.”

The airline already provides both domestic and international flights so the use of NFTs for airline tickets can certainly be used on an international scale.

This is not the first time that such an experiment has been done as airline companies in the UAE have also done similar concepts in the past.

The success of such use cases is important to demonstrate that there are much more valuable use cases that NFTs can provide besides just images of monkeys.

The value of tradeable access or ownership can be in high demand and Algorand’s capability of providing scalable NFTs allows the project to take advantage of the growing NFT sector.

Of course, mass adoption of this sector will take time just as it took many years for crypto to start to gain mass adoption.

CoinDesk concludes:

Passengers can purchase travel tickets through the Flybondi website using fiat currency, and TravelX issues a synchronized NFT ticket on top of the regular e-ticket.

Travelers can then create a Ticket 3.0 account to manage and store their NFTs through Flybondi. Ticket-related rules and conditions are integrated into the NFT’s smart contract by the airline.

“With this launch, we seek to generate a positive impact in the aviation industry through innovation and an application of blockchain technology,” said Flybondi CEO Mauricio Sana in a press release.

“Changing the rules of the game is never easy, but we know that it is our objective to evolve and offer our passengers a new stage of the freedom to fly.”
