A hand holds a hardware wallet beside an interrupted network connection

Binance’s 48-Hour Withdrawal Target Leaves a Crucial Gap for Bitcoin Holders

Binance says it is working toward restoring crypto withdrawals within 48 hours. For customers watching the clock, however, that estimate is not the same thing as having coins safely back in a personal wallet.

The practical distinction matters. A customer may still be able to trade Bitcoin inside an exchange account while being unable to send that Bitcoin to an outside address.

One changes market exposure. The other restores control over the asset.

CryptoSlate reported that Binance deposits remained available while crypto withdrawals were paused, with the exchange targeting a return within roughly 48 hours as it rebuilt withdrawal infrastructure and related addresses. The report also noted that Binance Japan had restored crypto deposits, trading, and fiat transfers while crypto withdrawals remained suspended.

Those service differences are easy to blur during a fast-moving security incident. A green trading screen does not prove that every network, coin, or account can complete an outbound blockchain transfer.

Recovery work is underway, but the exit route is still the test.

Binance said it had begun tracing, freezing, and recovering affected assets with law enforcement, token issuers, blockchain intelligence firms, and other industry partners. It has also pledged to cover customer losses using company resources and its SAFU emergency fund.

Freezing stolen funds and reimbursing losses are important. Neither, by itself, demonstrates that the withdrawal system is ready for normal traffic.

The clearest proof will be successful customer withdrawals that produce valid on-chain transactions and arrive at their destinations.

Binance’s own initial account of the breach points to why the repair is more involved than simply flipping a switch. The exchange said a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop may have allowed an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.

Binance said it had found no evidence at that stage that wallet private keys were stolen.

What Bitcoin holders should watch next.

The 48-hour target should be treated as a restoration estimate, not a guaranteed reopening time for every asset and network. Exchanges often bring services back in stages after a security event, and one network can remain paused after another resumes.

That creates a real constraint for anyone who needs to move collateral, settle an off-platform obligation, rebalance between venues, or return Bitcoin to self-custody.

A trader with funds already spread across multiple exchanges may still have options. A customer whose entire position sits inside Binance has fewer.

The strongest signs of recovery will be straightforward: an official description of the restored services, repeated successful withdrawals across major networks, matching blockchain transactions, and receipt at outside wallets. Binance has also promised an updated proof-of-reserves report after remediation, which will address a separate question about disclosed asset backing.

Until those checks are visible, the most accurate description is that trading access and custody access remain two different things. The market can keep moving while a customer’s exit route is still under repair.
