Bitcoin Holds Above $80,000 as Fed Rate-Hike Fears Ease
• October 17, 2026 7:19 am • CommentsBitcoin is holding the line above $80,000 as traders pull back from fears that the Federal Reserve is preparing another near-term rate hike.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency traded near $82,000 around Friday’s Wall Street open after buyers defended the $80,000 area. That rebound came alongside a partial recovery in Asian technology stocks and a sharp repricing of October rate expectations.
According to Cointelegraph, South Korea’s KOSPI rose 2% Friday after a punishing sell-off, though the index was still down 8.3% for the week. U.S. stocks were mixed, but the relative calm was enough to take some immediate pressure off Bitcoin.
The report said BTC/USD held most of the ground reclaimed after Thursday’s bounce at $80,000. At the same time, the Nasdaq slipped 0.5% while the S&P 500 gained 0.5%, a split market that kept traders focused on rates rather than a broad rush back into risk.
Bond yields remained the harder part of the picture. The 10-year Treasury yield stood near 5.07% after touching 5.13%, leaving Bitcoin caught between softer expectations for the Fed’s next move and borrowing costs that remain historically demanding.
Warsh Leaves the Door Closed on a Quick Hike
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh gave markets the biggest dose of relief. During a public discussion with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Warsh said he would not prejudge the Fed’s remaining meetings this year.
More importantly for traders, he did not signal that another hike was imminent.
The market response was quick. CME FedWatch pricing put the probability of a 25-basis-point increase in October at 15%, down from 27% one day earlier.
The Fed still has room to tighten, but traders are no longer treating an October hike as the likely outcome.
The Kobeissi Letter captured the speed of the cross-market move as bond yields reacted first to hotter inflation and then to weakness in equities:
The last 48 hours have been very telling.
After US CPI inflation rose to 3.7% on Wednesday, the 10Y Note Yield surged to 5.33%.
~24 hours later, it was -30 basis points lower as the S&P 500 and technology stocks sold off.

Bitcoin Still Has to Navigate the Bond Market
The macro danger has not disappeared. The 10-year Treasury yield briefly reached 5.13% before easing toward 5.07%.
Yields at that level keep financial conditions tight and give investors a compelling alternative to assets that do not produce income.
That tension is why Bitcoin’s defense of $80,000 matters. The asset absorbed a difficult week for global technology shares, survived another jump in yields and still recovered toward $82,000.
The move shows resilience, though Bitcoin has not yet produced a clean breakout.
A second Kobeissi market post offered a visual snapshot of the unusual equity backdrop that has been pushing yields around:

For crypto investors, the near-term equation is straightforward. If rate-hike odds remain contained and equity volatility continues to cool, Bitcoin has room to build above the $80,000 floor. If Treasury yields resume their climb and stocks roll over again, that support will face another serious test.
Either way, Friday’s action showed that buyers are still willing to step in when Bitcoin reaches the low-$80,000 range. After a week dominated by macro stress, holding that ground is a meaningful win.
