Ether Beat Bitcoin in Q3—But Its Trading Liquidity Got Thinner
• October 5, 2026 11:21 pm • CommentsEther delivered the stronger headline return in the third quarter. Under the surface, however, the market became less capable of absorbing a large trade without moving the price.
That tension matters because a rally and a healthy market are not always the same thing. Price tells traders where the last deal happened.
Liquidity tells them how much money can move before the market starts slipping away.
CoinDesk summarized new CoinGecko liquidity data showing that Ether rose 70% during the quarter, beating Bitcoin’s 42% gain. Yet from July 6 through September 30, Ether’s median daily market depth was only 35% to 45% of Bitcoin’s.
A year earlier, that ratio had been at least 60%.
The report put Ether’s order-book depth within 0.15% of market price at roughly $13 million to $14 million. Most exchanges still maintained more than $1 million on each side, so ETH remained readily tradable even as its relative cushion shrank.
CoinGecko also found thinner conditions in Solana and a different setup in XRP. SOL’s depth within 2% of price fell from about $28 million per side in 2025 to around $20 million, while XRP’s book carried roughly $18 million in bids against $14 million in asks.
In other words, ETH went up faster while the pool of nearby buy and sell orders became thinner relative to BTC.

Why market depth changes the trade
Market depth measures the value of orders waiting close to the current price. A deeper book can take a larger market order with less slippage.
A thinner one can turn the same order into a sharper move, both on the way up and on the way down.
CoinGecko measured roughly $13 million to $14 million of Ether depth within 0.15% of the market price. That is still enough for ETH to remain highly tradable, and most exchanges kept more than $1 million of depth on each side.
The year-over-year and Bitcoin-relative decline means traders should not confuse a rising price with an automatically stronger order book.
The distinction becomes especially important around liquidations, big treasury purchases, and sudden macro headlines. In a shallow book, momentum can feed on itself because each wave of buying or selling reaches further into the available orders.
That can make a rally look more explosive. It can also make a reversal hurt faster.
Institutional demand has not disappeared
The liquidity warning comes as large holders continue to build substantial ETH positions. BitMine’s October 5 update said the company held 6,016,414 ETH at the time of its report, part of $17.4 billion in crypto, cash and other holdings.

BitMine provided its latest holdings update for October 5, 2026$17.4 billion in total crypto + "moonshots":
– 6,016,414 ETH at $2,726 per ETH (per @coinbase)
– 214 Bitcoin (BTC)
– $180 million stake in Beast Industries @MrBeast
– $117 million stake in Eightco Holdings…— Bitmine (NYSE-BMNR) $ETH $BMNP (@BitMNR) October 5, 2026
That does not cancel the market-depth data. It explains why the issue deserves attention.
Concentrated demand from treasuries and other large buyers can support price while also making the quality and distribution of liquidity more consequential for everyone else.
XRP’s order book leaned toward buyers
The same CoinGecko work offered a useful contrast in XRP. XRP held around $30 million in total depth during the study period, with close to $18 million in bids and $14 million in asks.
Buy orders outweighed sell orders by about $4 million, a concrete difference that market capitalization alone does not show.
CoinGecko also found that Solana’s liquidity had weakened from 2025 levels. SOL had about $20 million on each side within 2% of the market price, down from roughly $28 million a year earlier.
Ether did not suddenly become illiquid. Its spectacular quarter simply arrived with less near-price support relative to Bitcoin than traders had a year ago.
For investors watching the next move, that makes depth worth monitoring alongside price. If liquidity rebuilds while demand stays strong, the rally gains a sturdier foundation.
If it keeps thinning, ETH may remain capable of big moves—but with less room for error.
