Ether ETF Outflows Cross $1 Billion as Direct ETH Buyers Keep Accumulating
• October 21, 2026 3:36 pm • CommentsEther’s October problem is no longer a single ugly trading day. U.S. spot Ether exchange-traded funds have now lost more than $1 billion this month, turning September’s inflow into a distant memory.
The funds recorded roughly $1.08 billion in net outflows through October 20. That erased September’s approximately $832 million of net inflows and left the products with only about $485 million of net inflows for all of 2026.
Cointelegraph, citing SoSoValue data, reports that another $26 million left the funds Tuesday, extending the withdrawal streak even after September delivered a strong positive month. October is already their worst month of 2026 and the largest monthly withdrawal since November 2025, with eight trading sessions still remaining and the full monthly total therefore not yet final.
The price has moved in the same direction. Ether was down about 9.7% for October, from roughly $2,700 to $2,438 in the cited market snapshot, and nearly 18% for the year.
Bitcoin funds offered a sharp contrast. Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in about $23 million Tuesday after a roughly $527 million inflow Monday.
The Bitcoin funds remained near a $67 million net outflow for October while their 2026 net inflows stood around $809 million.
That comparison shows the pressure is concentrated in Ether products rather than spread evenly across every U.S. spot crypto fund. Ether’s October withdrawals also wiped out more than the entire inflow recorded during September.
With eight sessions left in the month, Ether funds still have time to recover part of the loss. But the current pace has already turned what began as ordinary volatility into a sustained capital-flow trend.
ETF investors and direct buyers are splitting.
The headline number is bearish, but it does not describe every institutional buyer. While fund shareholders have been redeeming, BitMine Immersion Technologies said it acquired another 12,535 ETH during the week.
BitMine reported 6,041,481 ETH in total holdings as of October 18. The company said it has bought Ether every week since launching its treasury strategy in June 2025.
That makes the contrast unusually sharp: liquid ETF demand is retreating while one of the largest direct corporate holders keeps accumulating.
BitMine valued its ETH position using a $2,365 market price and reported total crypto, cash, and marketable-securities holdings of $15.1 billion. It also said more than 5 million ETH was already staked through its institutional validator operation.
The purchase therefore was not a one-off trading position. It extended a treasury program that has kept buying through a weak market and now controls close to 5% of Ether’s reported supply.

That divergence matters because ETFs and treasury companies respond to different pressures. ETF shareholders can reduce exposure in a click when rates rise or risk appetite weakens.
A company building a long-term ETH reserve is making a slower, more concentrated bet and may continue buying through the same volatility.
Distribution is still widening.
Ethereum’s access story is also moving forward despite the fund outflows. Germany’s Sparkassen network has opened crypto trading that includes Ethereum alongside Bitcoin, XRP, and Solana.
That launch expands the pool of potential buyers beyond U.S. brokerage accounts, even while the ETF channel remains under pressure.

For Ether, the near-term question is whether redemptions slow before the price loses another important support zone. The medium-term question is more interesting: are ETF holders leaving Ethereum itself, or are they simply the most rate-sensitive group in a market where direct corporate buyers and bank customers are still entering?
Right now the evidence points to a split market, not a universal exit. The ETF channel is weak enough to pressure price and sentiment.
At the same time, direct accumulation and new retail distribution keep building underneath it. That tension is likely to define Ether’s next move.
