The Whitefield County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia is warning residents of an ongoing crypto scam at a Bitcoin ATM.

The WCSO has warned that local Bitcoin ATMs are hotspots for scams and fraudulent transactions.

Investigators at the WSCO reported scammers will call a victim and give the victim instructions to make a transaction to the scammer’s wallet.

Tracking down the scammers is nearly impossible due to the scammer’s wallet being anonymous.

Per Local 3 News:

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is making efforts to bring more attention to the scams that can happen at cryptocurrency ATMs.

In a Facebook post, the WCSO says investigators have noticed that the machines can be hotspots for scams and fraudulent transactions because scammers will use them get money from victims.

Scammers will call an unsuspecting victim with instructions for making transactions at the machines which is then deposited into a crypto wallet that belongs to the scammer.

The WCSO says these kinds of transactions are nearly impossible to track due the anonymity of almost all cryptocurrencies.

The signs being placed at the machines remind people of the red flags to look for in a potential scam and how to report any kind of fraudulent activity.
