Russia Clears Sberbank to Put Bitcoin Trading Inside Its Banking Apps
• October 14, 2026 8:13 pm • CommentsRussia’s largest bank is preparing to put crypto trading inside the same digital channels millions of customers already use for ordinary banking.
The Decrypt report says the Bank of Russia added Sberbank to its register of authorized cryptocurrency exchange operators on October 12. That approval followed the bank’s earlier registration as a digital depository, giving it a regulated path to handle both trading and custody-related functions.
Sberbank says it intends to begin with Bitcoin, Ether and Tether’s USDT on December 1 through SberBank Online, SberInvestments and SberBusiness. The date is not unconditional: the bank says the launch still depends on the central bank completing the secondary regulations that govern the new market.

A regulated on-ramp with an enormous customer base
The scale is what makes this development matter. Sberbank reported 110.6 million retail clients and 3.5 million corporate clients at the end of the second quarter, according to the same report.
If the December rollout proceeds, crypto access will not arrive through a new specialist exchange. It will appear inside established financial apps that customers already know.
CoinDesk says Sberbank is already testing trades in BTC, ETH and USDT. The central bank will determine the final list of eligible assets, so the opening lineup can still change before the broader launch.
The approval is also a sharp turn from the Bank of Russia’s 2022 proposal to bar domestic crypto exchanges and keep financial intermediaries away from digital assets. Instead, Russia now has a regulated structure for banks, brokers, exchanges and digital depositories.
The exchange-provider and digital-depository registrations cover different jobs. One lets a registered dealer buy and sell crypto with its own funds, while the other records customer ownership and transfers.
Sberbank’s two approvals therefore matter as a pair. They give the bank a route to build trading and custody into one customer relationship instead of handing either function to an outside crypto platform.

Trading does not mean unrestricted crypto use
The new framework is tightly controlled. Cryptocurrency still cannot be used to pay for goods and services inside Russia.
Non-qualified investors face annual purchase limits through each intermediary and must pass a knowledge test. Beginning in July 2027, trades are also expected to move through registered intermediaries, restricting peer-to-peer activity settled through Russian bank accounts.
That distinction is important. Sberbank’s move is not a declaration that crypto has become parallel money inside Russia.
It is the construction of a supervised investment channel for major digital assets, with a state-controlled bank sitting between the customer and the market.
Cointelegraph reports that the exchange and custody registrations arrive under rules that took effect September 1. Sberbank can now prepare the operational pieces, but regulators still control which coins qualify and how broadly customers can participate.
What to watch before December 1
The next test is execution. Investors should watch for the central bank’s final eligible-asset list, the detailed limits applied to retail users, and confirmation that deposits and withdrawals will launch alongside buying and selling.
If all of those pieces arrive, Sberbank will turn crypto from a separate destination into another option inside mainstream banking software. Bitcoin, Ether and USDT would move much closer to a massive pool of customers inside a tightly controlled system.
That would mark one of the clearest institutional reversals in the country’s crypto policy.
