X Turns Crypto Cashtags Into a Direct Path to Coinbase, Kraken and Gemini
• September 20, 2026 7:13 am • CommentsX has spent years serving as crypto’s loudest public trading floor. Now it is shortening the distance between the conversation and the actual trade.
The platform’s new U.S. Cashtag Partner Program gives users a direct route from tickers such as $BTC and $ETH to participating financial firms. The initial group includes Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Interactive Brokers and Moomoo.
That does not turn X itself into a crypto exchange. It does something potentially more important for customer acquisition: it puts an exchange choice directly beside the moment a user is already thinking about an asset.
What the new Cashtag trade path actually does
TechCrunch reports that tapping a supported Cashtag opens an asset page with a live chart, related posts and a Trade option. The user then chooses a participating brokerage or exchange and is redirected to that provider’s app or website.
The distinction matters. X hosts the discovery layer and the conversation, but Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini or another partner handles the account, custody and transaction.
Users still have to sign in or register and review the provider’s own price, spread and fees.
The program launched in the United States with both traditional brokerages and crypto exchanges, so the same Cashtag system can cover stocks, ETFs and digital assets. That mixed partner list also shows that X is building a market-discovery layer rather than operating one closed trading venue.
Former X product leader Nikita Bier previewed that direction in August, describing trading controls as the next step after Cashtags added crypto charts and contract-address information.
What are you talking about?
I literally built Cashtags, allowing people to add Solana and Ethereum charts directly into posts—with trade buttons coming soon.
You can even paste contract addresses for newly minted tokens.
There wasn’t a single feature on X for crypto traders…

Coin Bureau’s contemporaneous post showed how quickly the announcement was understood across the crypto market: as a move toward making the timeline a direct gateway to trading.
🚨BREAKING: X to enable trade buttons to BUY and SELL crypto directly from the timeline.
Nikita Bier confirms X will soon add native crypto trading buttons, potentially turning every post into a direct gateway to on-platform crypto trading.

Why this matters for crypto exchanges
CryptoSlate’s analysis frames the change as a battle for distribution. Exchanges have traditionally competed on liquidity, fees, product selection and trust. Those factors remain decisive once a trader compares platforms, but the new Cashtag flow gives partners a chance to be present one step earlier—when interest first becomes intent.
That is especially important in crypto, where market discovery often begins in public. A project announcement, a founder’s post, a market-data thread or a burst of discussion around Bitcoin can create demand before a user ever opens an exchange app.
X can now place a bridge at that exact point. For an exchange, winning the Cashtag click may become nearly as valuable as winning a search result or app-store placement.
Less friction also raises the stakes
The shorter route is convenient, but it does not make the information in the feed more reliable. Posts can be useful, misleading, promotional or driven by momentum.
The platform’s recommendation system is built to surface attention, not to decide whether an asset is appropriate for a particular buyer.
That makes the handoff worth understanding clearly. A Cashtag can help users identify an asset and reach a participating provider.
It cannot replace checking the asset, contract address, market depth, fees or risk before trading.
The biggest change is not that X executes the trade—it does not. The platform where crypto conviction is often formed now sits directly beside the doorway to execution.
For Coinbase, Kraken and Gemini, that doorway could become one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in the crypto market.
