Bitcoin’s $81,500 ETF Cost Basis Becomes the Market’s Next Line in the Sand

Bitcoin is sitting on a level that matters for more than technical analysis. Around $81,500 is the estimated average cost basis of US spot Bitcoin ETF buyers.

With price trading on both sides of that line, Wall Street’s newest Bitcoin holders are being tested in real time.

Cointelegraph found Bitcoin as low as $81,256 on Bitstamp Thursday, down roughly 2.9% on the day. Stocks weakened as geopolitical headlines pushed investors toward a more defensive posture.

The report placed the pullback against Wednesday’s push toward $85,000 and the average spot ETF cost basis near $81,500. That turned the decline into a direct test of recent institutional buyers rather than an ordinary intraday dip.

President Trump said the United States was not negotiating with Iran and again raised the possibility of military action. Oil reacted immediately, adding another inflationary variable just days before the Federal Reserve’s October 28 policy decision.

Bitfinex Alpha’s near-term map ran from $81,300 to $84,400. Its analysts said steady ETF demand and stable leverage could open the upper boundary, while a close below $81,300 would put the October 15 low near $79,821 back in play.

Oil adds pressure to an already nervous market.

Brent crude climbed above $112, its highest level since May. Higher oil prices can tighten financial conditions by keeping inflation pressure alive, complicating the Fed’s path and reducing investors’ appetite for volatile assets.

Oil above $112 adds to the same risk calculation hitting stocks and Bitcoin. If energy costs remain elevated while equities sell off, investors have less reason to reach for assets that can move several percentage points in a session.

That macro pressure arrived just after Bitcoin approached $85,000. The rejection dropped price back toward the ETF cost basis, turning what had looked like a rebound into a test of whether recent institutional buyers will hold through another bout of volatility.

The $81,300-$84,400 range is tightening.

Bitfinex Alpha analysts identified a near-term range from about $81,300 to $84,400 ahead of the Fed meeting. Sustained ETF demand and stable leverage could support a break above the upper boundary.

A daily close below $81,300, especially with continuing macro pressure, would increase the risk of revisiting the October 15 low near $79,821.

Above $84,400, buyers regain control and the ETF cost basis starts looking like defended support. Below $81,300, recent ETF buyers are underwater with little room before the psychologically important $80,000 zone.

One large holder sold nearly 1,918 BTC while buying more than 64,500 ETH over 11 days:

The rotation shows a major player making an active choice inside the selloff rather than simply exiting crypto. Bitcoin still carries the deepest liquidity and strongest institutional footprint.

Ethereum can nevertheless attract relative-value trades when investors believe its risk-reward has improved.

The ETF cost basis is now a behavior test.

The most important question is not whether $81,500 is a perfect technical level. It is whether investors who entered through regulated funds treat a dip below their average price as a buying opportunity or a reason to reduce exposure.

Fresh ETF demand could absorb forced selling and keep the market boxed inside the Bitfinex range. Persistent outflows would turn the average cost basis into overhead resistance.

That distinction will matter more than a brief intraday break.

For now, the market has a clean map: $81,300 is the nearby floor, $84,400 is the breakout level, and roughly $79,821 is the next downside reference if support fails. Oil and geopolitical headlines may decide how quickly Bitcoin tests those boundaries, but ETF-holder behavior will decide whether the $81,500 line becomes support—or a ceiling.
