Bitcoin Breaks Below $80,000 as Hot Producer Inflation Shakes Crypto Markets
• October 15, 2026 3:08 pm • CommentsBitcoin briefly broke below $80,000 on Thursday after a hotter-than-expected U.S. producer inflation report hit risk assets and revived fears that interest rates could stay higher for longer.
The move was sharp enough to matter, but the more useful question is why it happened. No crypto-specific scandal or Bitcoin network failure caused it.
A macro shock moved through stocks, rates, and digital assets at the same time.
Producer inflation came in much hotter than expected
Cointelegraph reported that September’s U.S. Producer Price Index rose 6.3% against expectations of 5.3%, the largest monthly increase since March 2022. Bitcoin slipped under $80,000 after the release as traders adjusted to the possibility that inflation pressure could keep the Federal Reserve from easing policy.
That difference matters. Bitcoin often trades like a high-beta liquidity asset when the market is repricing interest rates.
A stronger inflation reading can push bond yields higher, make cash and short-term government debt more competitive, and reduce investors’ appetite for volatile assets. Crypto can feel that change immediately because it trades around the clock and carries a large derivatives market.
The initial break below $80,000 was followed by an attempted defense of the level. That does not settle the next move.
It shows that buyers were willing to respond around a widely watched round number while the market absorbed the inflation surprise.
The chart had already lost momentum
Technical analyst Aksel Kibar noted that Bitcoin’s move above $82,800 had failed to produce a strong weekly close. The failed breakout left momentum weaker before Thursday’s inflation shock.
Breach above 82.8K lacked a strong weekly close. This means weak momentum. A weekly close inside the range can resume wide consolidation between 60K-82.8K

That framing helps separate a level from a prophecy. A failed weekly breakout can reopen a wider range without guaranteeing that Bitcoin visits every lower support inside it.
Rekt Capital pointed to the 21-week and 50-week exponential moving averages as the next major trend references. Those areas have mattered during earlier pullbacks, but the analyst also stressed that the present setup is not identical to prior bullish crossover periods.
Bitcoin is now not very far away from retesting the 50-week (purple) and 21-week (green) EMAs
Deviating below them on a volatile retest to find a pullback bottom has historically happened in early-stage Bull Markets

What matters after the first reaction
Three things now deserve attention. The first is whether Bitcoin can reclaim $80,000 and hold it through the weekly close.
The second is whether bond yields remain elevated after the market has had time to digest the inflation data. The third is whether leveraged positioning resets cleanly or creates another round of forced selling.
A quick rebound would not erase the inflation problem, and another dip would not by itself prove that Bitcoin’s long-term case has changed. The immediate story is simpler: a hot economic report hit a market that had already shown weak breakout momentum.
Bitcoin is still the largest and most liquid crypto asset, but liquidity does not make it immune to the price of money. Thursday’s drop was another reminder that, in the short run, the Federal Reserve and the bond market can matter as much as anything happening on-chain.
