Bitcoin Rebounds Above $83,000 as South Korea’s AI Selloff Hits Stocks

Bitcoin absorbed another violent leverage flush on Tuesday and still found its way back above $83,000.

The largest cryptocurrency fell below $81,000 during Asian trading before recovering more than 3% from the low, according to CryptoSlate. The rebound came after more than $800 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated across the market, with bullish bets accounting for most of the damage.

Bitcoin’s recovery was meaningful because risk assets around it were still under pressure. The broader crypto market remained weak, derivatives positioning still favored sellers, and the move stalled near the same $84,000 area that traders have been watching as near-term resistance.

The result was a split picture: Bitcoin recovered faster than many risk assets, but the market did not produce a clean all-clear signal. Buyers defended the low while leverage and order-flow data showed sellers still had plenty of force.

South Korea supplied the sharpest shock. Yonhap News Agency reported that the KOSPI closed down 5.46% at 6,035.35 after technology shares tumbled on renewed concerns about artificial-intelligence spending, inflation, and competition in the semiconductor sector.

The decline was disorderly enough for the Korea Exchange to trigger a sell-side sidecar after the index stayed down more than 5% for at least one minute. Foreign investors sold a net 4.51 trillion won, or roughly $3.35 billion, while domestic institutions and individuals stepped in as buyers.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were among the names hit hardest as investors reconsidered the durability of the AI trade. The KOSPI briefly fell below 6,000 during the session before recovering part of the loss into the close.

Bitcoin’s bounce against that backdrop will encourage bulls who want to see it behave as something more durable than a high-beta technology trade. It is still too early to call the move a full decoupling from equities.

The derivatives washout explains part of Bitcoin’s rebound. When heavily leveraged long positions are forced out, selling can accelerate into the low and then ease quickly once the weakest positions have been cleared.

That mechanical reset does not create durable demand by itself. Net taker volume turned negative again during the session, a sign that aggressive market sellers continued to outweigh buyers even after Bitcoin climbed off the floor.

The $84,000 area is now the immediate test. A sustained move through that level would show that spot buyers are willing to take over after the leverage flush, while another rejection would keep Bitcoin trapped in the volatile range between the low-$80,000s and mid-$80,000s.

Bitcoin survived a brutal session better than South Korea’s technology-heavy stock market. The next move will show whether that resilience came from real demand or merely from exhausted sellers.
