Ethereum tokens flowing into an institutional vault

BitMine Crosses 6 Million ETH as Tom Lee Bets the Wealth Transfer Will Favor Crypto

BitMine’s Ethereum treasury has crossed 6.02 million ETH, putting the company within striking distance of a target that once sounded almost absurd: owning 5% of the entire supply.

The latest purchase was not enormous by BitMine’s standards. The company added 12,532 ETH over the past week.

That addition leaves the balance sheet near a historic concentration point—and exposes the broader bet chairman Tom Lee says sits behind it.

BitMine reported 6,028,946 ETH in its October 12 holdings release, valued at $2,544 per token. That equals about 4.9% of Ethereum’s stated 122.1 million supply.

The company says that puts it 99% of the way to its “Alchemy of 5%” objective.

BitMine also reported 214 Bitcoin and $612 million in cash and marketable securities. Its other listed positions include a $180 million stake in Beast Industries and an $85 million stake in Eightco Holdings.

The company put the combined value of crypto, cash, marketable securities and those investments at $16.2 billion. Of the ETH total, 5,067,309 tokens were staked, giving the treasury an operating yield component alongside its exposure to price.

The concentration is hard to ignore. BitMine said 5,067,309 ETH is already staked, worth $12.9 billion at the company’s reference price.

It also listed 214 Bitcoin, $612 million in cash and marketable securities, a $180 million stake in Beast Industries and an $85 million stake in Eightco. Altogether, it put crypto, cash, marketable securities and those “moonshot” investments at $16.2 billion.

The company said the position was built in 15 months and emphasized that the majority was accumulated during a bear market. It also highlighted that 5,067,309 ETH is staked through its validator strategy, turning much of the treasury into a yield-producing position rather than a dormant reserve.

The release presents those numbers as proof that scale is now BitMine’s advantage. Investors still have to decide whether that scale lowers the company’s cost of operating an ETH treasury or simply concentrates more market risk in one vehicle.

The last percentage point changes the question.

When a public company holds nearly one token out of every twenty, this stops being just another treasury headline. The market has to think about supply concentration, staking power, liquidity and the risk of tying a corporate equity story to one volatile asset.

BitMine sees the same facts through a bullish lens. Lee argues that the company accumulated most of its position during a crypto bear market and is approaching the target just as the next expansion begins.

The company’s scale could amplify gains if that thesis is right. It can also amplify the consequences if ETH weakens or investors decide treasury-company premiums no longer make sense.

CoinDesk connects the weekly purchase to Lee’s larger argument. He expects between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion to pass to younger generations during this market cycle, compared with roughly $450 billion during the 2019–2021 cycle.

His bet is that heirs who are more comfortable with digital assets will shift some inherited wealth away from credit and toward crypto and equities. Lee also points to tokenization by firms such as BlackRock, JPMorgan and Robinhood as evidence that the institutional side of the thesis is already moving.

In that framing, BitMine’s ETH is a bet on both investor preference and financial infrastructure. Younger holders would bring fresh demand, while the migration of traditional assets onchain could give Ethereum more economic work to settle.

The report does not establish that inherited money will automatically flow into ETH. It shows the specific capital shift Lee is underwriting and why BitMine wants its supply position in place before that shift can be measured.

A treasury bet on tokenization and price.

Lee’s argument goes beyond expecting ETH to rise. He points to banks, asset managers and trading platforms moving traditional assets onchain.

If tokenization expands, Ethereum’s value proposition would come from serving as settlement infrastructure, while BitMine’s massive staked position would participate in securing that system.

That thesis has two separate moving parts. Younger investors must actually direct inherited money toward digital assets, and Ethereum must capture a meaningful share of institutional tokenization.

Neither outcome is guaranteed simply because BitMine owns a large pile of ETH.

Still, the company has turned the thesis into something measurable. It owns 6,028,946 ETH, and more than five million is staked.

The position represents 4.9% of supply. With the 5% line nearly reached, investors can now judge BitMine less by how quickly it keeps buying and more by what it does with an asset base of extraordinary size.

The next chapter is not “Can BitMine accumulate ETH?” It already answered that. The real test is whether Lee’s tokenization-and-wealth-transfer thesis produces enough durable demand to justify concentrating this much Ethereum inside one public company.
