Bitcoin breaking through dark market pressure toward a bright amber horizon

Citi’s $113,000 Bitcoin Target Faces a Fresh Test as BTC Slips Below $83,000

Citi’s renewed Bitcoin bull case just ran into the kind of market test that makes a price target useful.

The bank recently raised its 12-month Bitcoin target from $82,000 to $113,000. Then Bitcoin slipped below $83,000 on Thursday, handing traders a clean question: was Citi early, or is the demand behind its call already fading?

The answer depends less on one red session than on whether steady institutional buying survives the next few weeks.

CryptoSlate reports that Citi expects roughly $5 billion to enter crypto investment products over the coming 12 months. The bank is counting on advisers and brokerage platforms gradually putting more client money into Bitcoin exposure.

Citi’s thesis is built around durable allocations instead of a short retail stampede. The bank also sees improving regulation and a more supportive macro backdrop helping Bitcoin recover.

The forecast has plenty of room for failure. If higher Treasury yields keep giving institutions a strong low-risk alternative, Bitcoin will have to work harder to attract the steady capital Citi expects.

Citi also raised its Ether target from $2,240 to $3,028. The broader upgrade ties the call to institutional crypto demand across both leading assets.

Crypto.com notes that the $113,000 target still sits below Bitcoin’s record above $126,000. Citi is calling for a substantial recovery, but not a new all-time high.

The bank started 2026 with a $143,000 target, reduced it to $112,000 in March and cut it again to $82,000 in July. The latest revision restores much of that lost optimism after ETF money returned and forced-seller fears eased.

U.S. spot Bitcoin funds took in about $2.65 billion during September. A nine-day inflow streak helped flip the year’s fund flows back into positive territory, giving Citi a concrete demand trend to build on.

That streak ended with roughly $149 million leaving the funds on September 30. September still finished strong, while the next several weekly flow reports now carry more weight.

Bitcoin’s early-October push through $86,000 showed how quickly spot demand can force short sellers out of the way. It also showed why a single rally cannot prove Citi’s thesis.

The market added tens of billions of dollars in value during that burst, while short liquidations accelerated the move. Buyers still failed to hold the stronger level through Thursday.

CoinDesk reported Bitcoin falling below $83,000 as the market digested a fresh round of technical-security debate. The drop pushed BTC back toward the lower end of its recent range after buyers failed to defend the mid-$80,000s.

The same session reinforced how fragile the recovery remains. Bitcoin can still jump hard when spot demand appears, but sellers have repeatedly returned near the $86,000 to $87,000 area.

The immediate test is whether the low-$80,000 range attracts genuine buyers. A rebound driven by spot volume would say more about Citi’s case than another leverage-fueled squeeze.

The longer test is weekly ETF demand. Several more negative weeks would directly undercut the bank’s assumption that adviser and brokerage allocations are becoming steadier.

Treasury yields remain the other pressure point. When government bonds pay more than 5%, large investors have a compelling alternative to a volatile asset that produces no cash flow.

Citi’s $113,000 number is a map, not a promise. If fund demand stays durable while Bitcoin absorbs this pullback, the bank’s call will look patient.

If ETF outflows accelerate and $82,000 breaks decisively, the market will have rejected Citi’s key assumption well before the forecast reaches its deadline.
