Ethereum’s Quick Slots Push Could Cut Block Times to 10 Seconds

Ethereum’s next speed upgrade may begin with a change that looks modest on paper: cutting block times from 12 seconds to 10.

But that two-second reduction would touch nearly every onchain interaction. Trades could confirm sooner, wallets could feel more responsive, and applications built on Ethereum could deliver faster feedback without waiting for a much larger redesign of the network.

The proposal is EIP-8198, better known as Quick Slots, and it targets a foundational timing rule that shapes how quickly every wallet and application receives a new block. Cointelegraph reported that Ethlabs is pushing the change as an initial step toward faster Ethereum blocks while researching the downstream systems that depend on today’s cadence.

The group has been gathering support from decentralized-finance builders while working to move the specification closer to production code.

The initial target is a 10-second block interval, down from the current 12 seconds. The proposal has been discussed for Ethereum’s Hegota upgrade, which is expected after Glamsterdam later in 2026.

Supporters quoted by Ethlabs include builders from major decentralized-finance projects. Their argument is that quicker blocks would improve the experience of trading and other time-sensitive onchain activity without waiting for a wholesale redesign.

The report also placed Ethereum’s work beside speed changes on competing networks. Solana has already reduced its slot time, while Zcash holders recently backed a shorter target block interval.

Ethereum developers could begin implementing Hegota after Glamsterdam, but no mainnet activation is guaranteed yet. The proposal still has to clear engineering review and the network’s normal consensus process.

Ethereum Institutional publicly backed the effort, arguing that lower latency would strengthen Ethereum’s position as more financial activity moves onto public blockchains.

Quick Slots is not being presented as a magic fix for throughput. A shorter block interval does not automatically multiply Ethereum’s capacity.

Faster timing can introduce engineering tradeoffs involving propagation, validators, and downstream infrastructure. The goal is narrower: improve latency while preserving Ethereum’s architecture and security assumptions.

Ethlabs has said it is merging the proposal’s specifications into the main codebase and examining dependencies that could be affected. Wallets, exchanges, staking systems, layer-2 networks, indexers, and decentralized applications all build around Ethereum’s timing.

Even a small protocol-level adjustment must be tested against that large ecosystem.

The proposal has been discussed for possible inclusion in Hegota, the upgrade expected to follow Glamsterdam. That means Quick Slots still has to survive technical review, implementation work and developer consensus before users see a faster cadence on mainnet.

The competitive context is hard to ignore. Other major networks have been shortening block or slot times as they compete for trading, payments and institutional settlement.

Ethereum remains the dominant programmable settlement layer by many measures, but users increasingly judge networks by response time as well as secure settlement.

A move from 12 seconds to 10 would not turn Ethereum into an instant network overnight. It would, however, establish a meaningful direction: smaller, testable latency gains that can compound across the ecosystem. If developers can deliver that improvement without weakening reliability, Quick Slots could make Ethereum feel faster where users notice it most.
