Ethereum Staking Yield Shrinks, but a 1.38 Million ETH Entry Line Keeps Growing
• October 24, 2026 7:18 am • CommentsEthereum staking is paying less than it used to, but investors are still lining up to lock away a staggering amount of ETH.
Roughly 1.38 million ETH was waiting to enter staking as of October 23, according to current network data cited by CryptoSlate. The estimated wait for a new validator had stretched to 24 days and nine hours.
That is the interesting tension: the yield has narrowed to the point where it barely beats some conventional cash rates, yet demand to stake keeps building.
Lido was quoting an annual staking return of roughly 2.2%. For a hypothetical €10,000 position, that works out to about €220 over a year if the ETH price does not move.
The average rate on newly agreed euro-area household deposits of up to one year was 2.13%, a difference of just €7 on the same starting amount.
Of course, ETH does move. A modest price swing can overwhelm an entire year of staking rewards in hours.
For anyone whose real goal is preserving a euro or dollar balance, staking is a poor substitute for a savings account.
Many of the biggest stakers are making a different calculation. They already want long-term exposure to Ethereum.
For them, the choice is whether to earn additional ETH on an asset they intend to hold or leave those coins idle.
That helps explain why more than 44 million ETH—over 36% of the supply—is now staked. The entry line has come down from a backlog above 2 million ETH in August, but a wait measured in weeks still signals persistent demand.
A recent on-chain update showed just how quickly one large holder can add pressure. BitMine reportedly deposited another 159,728 ETH into staking, bringing its total above 5.2 million ETH.
At the same snapshot, the entry queue stood near 1.33 million ETH while the exit queue was much smaller.
https://t.co/YRMuygDpYq… pic.twitter.com/pyyOFucRxz— 余烬 (@EmberCN) October 21, 2026
The economics naturally get thinner as participation rises. Ethereum’s reward formula spreads issuance across a larger pool of active stake, so the percentage return falls as more ETH joins.
Lower network fees also reduce the tips and transaction-ordering income available to validators.
The Block, summarizing Bitwise’s latest quarterly staking report, said Ethereum’s annualized staking yield averaged 2.63% in the third quarter, down from 2.81% in the prior quarter. Nearly 2 million ETH flowed into staking during the quarter, marking a sixth consecutive quarter of positive flows.
The report also found that newly issued ETH accounted for more than 96% of staking rewards, while network revenue fell to roughly $40.6 million from $63 million in the second quarter. In other words, the network attracted more stake even as the income produced by actual transaction activity weakened.
Queues can reverse quickly, and the exit side carries its own risks. Earlier in October, Everstake noted that the validator exit queue had climbed above 850,000 ETH.
Operational incidents, custody decisions and large treasury moves can all shift that balance.
‼️Ethereum’s validator exit queue just reached its highest level of 2026.
The ETH validator exit queue has reached 850,736 ETH, and on the first look, the number looks huge, but we have to say that Ethereum has grown to a scale where even hundreds of thousands of ethereum:native… pic.twitter.com/n3dFKrFCev

New direct validators earn no native staking rewards while waiting to activate. At a 2.46% network rate, CryptoSlate calculated that a 32 ETH validator waiting 24 days and nine hours would miss roughly 0.053 ETH compared with immediate activation, assuming the rate stayed constant.
Liquid-staking services handle that delay differently by spreading rewards from validators already online across the pool. That can soften the wait for an individual depositor, but it does not eliminate smart-contract, operator, liquidity or slashing risk.
The queue is not proof that staking suddenly became a high-yield trade. It is evidence that a growing class of investors has already made the bigger bet on Ethereum and wants that position earning something—even when the return is getting squeezed.
