Frozen Bitcoin at the center of a disrupted cross-chain bridge

Osmosis Freezes 22.65 BTC as Nomic Bug Exposes a 39.84-Bitcoin Reserve Gap

A cross-chain Bitcoin problem has forced Osmosis to freeze 22.65 BTC while the ecosystem works through a much larger reserve shortfall tied to Nomic.

The issue is serious, but the distinction matters: Osmosis says the bug did not compromise the Osmosis chain or the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol. It was traced to a custom forwarding mechanism on Nomic that allowed an attacker to double-spend nBTC and send false vouchers into Osmosis.

CryptoSlate reports that the incident left 39.84 nBTC without matching Bitcoin collateral. Osmosis has frozen 22.65 BTC connected to the incident, but even a complete recovery of that amount would still leave about 17.19 BTC to replace.

Osmosis addressed the scope directly, stressing that the vulnerability sat in Nomic’s custom forwarding logic rather than in Osmosis or IBC itself:

The backing math was first laid out publicly by the on-chain analyst Rarma. The analysis counted about 110.57 allBTC in circulation against approximately 70.73 BTC in real collateral, producing the 39.84 BTC gap now at the center of the response.

The proposed cleanup would use the frozen Bitcoin first and then rely on Osmosis community-pool funds for the remaining hole. That makes the governance response nearly as important as the technical postmortem: token holders must decide how the loss is absorbed and what safeguards are required before affected Bitcoin representations can regain confidence.

Cross-chain assets depend on more than the security of their destination chain. They also depend on every bridge, voucher and forwarding layer preserving a clean one-to-one relationship with the collateral underneath.

A narrow flaw in one layer can create a reserve problem that surfaces somewhere else.

For users, the next hard evidence will be the final recovery total, the community’s decision on replacing the shortfall and a detailed account of how the forwarding bug passed earlier controls. Until those pieces are settled, the 22.65 BTC freeze is containment—not the end of the incident.
