RLUSD Lands on Coinbase With Moody’s Investment-Grade Ratings Behind It
• October 29, 2026 7:17 am • CommentsRipple’s RLUSD has gained two things stablecoins need if they want to compete for serious financial use: broader distribution and a recognizable credit-risk signal.
The dollar-backed token is now available through Coinbase’s retail and institutional channels, with support spanning the XRP Ledger, Base and Ethereum. At the same time, Moody’s has assigned RLUSD an A2 long-term rating and a P-1 short-term rating.
CryptoSlate ties those developments together: Coinbase gives RLUSD access to a much larger U.S. trading and custody base, while the Moody’s ratings give institutional users a familiar way to evaluate the reserves and legal structure behind the token.
The report says the launch reaches Coinbase’s retail and institutional platforms and adds Base to RLUSD’s existing XRP Ledger and Ethereum footprint. It also notes that the rating came as Ripple pushes the stablecoin deeper into regulated custody, payments and settlement.
CryptoSlate says Moody’s cited the quality and liquidity of the backing assets as part of the rating case. Most of the reserves are held at BNY, with U.S. Treasury bills and other short-duration government assets making up the core of the backing.
The report also places RLUSD’s expansion inside a much larger stablecoin market dominated by USDT and USDC. Coinbase access gives Ripple a credible distribution jump, but adoption still depends on whether institutions choose to hold and move the token at scale.
According to Ripple, Coinbase customers can trade and manage RLUSD through Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange and the retail app. Supported customers can convert between U.S. dollars, other supported dollar stablecoins and RLUSD on a one-to-one basis.
Ripple says deposits and withdrawals are available across XRP Ledger, Base and Ethereum. The company will provide liquidity on Base, while access for Coinbase Global Exchange customers and possible collateral use are planned for a later stage.
The announcement says RLUSD has grown beyond $2.4 billion in market capitalization since its December 2024 launch. Ripple presents the Coinbase deal as a route into execution, settlement and custody for both retail and institutional customers.
Coinbase Assets confirmed that sends and receives are available on all three supported networks:
Sends and receives of RLUSD on Base, Ethereum, and XRPL are now available on coinbase․com and in the Coinbase iOS & Android apps in supported regions.

That network coverage is strategically important. XRP Ledger support keeps RLUSD connected to Ripple’s native payments ecosystem.
Ethereum opens the broadest established stablecoin and decentralized-finance market. Base gives the token a direct route into Coinbase’s own onchain ecosystem.
Ripple says access for Coinbase Global Exchange customers will follow, including planned use of RLUSD as collateral. That future step could matter more than a simple listing because collateral utility creates recurring institutional demand rather than one-time trading interest.
Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, said Moody’s assigned RLUSD an A2 long-term rating and P-1 short-term rating—the highest grade in Moody’s short-term scale under the framework being applied.
More good news for $RLUSD this week – @moodysratings has assigned RLUSD an A2 long-term rating and P-1 short-term rating, the highest possible short-term rating under its new stablecoin framework.
TL;DR: RLUSD is the first stablecoin to have ever received an investment-grade…

An investment-grade rating is not a guarantee, and it does not remove the ordinary risks of stablecoin use. It is a structured opinion about credit quality and short-term repayment capacity. For corporate treasurers and regulated institutions, however, that language is easier to plug into existing risk committees than a project’s own reserve claims.
Ripple says RLUSD is backed by U.S. dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasuries and other cash equivalents. The company also says BNY holds most of the reserve assets.
Those details, combined with the rating, frame RLUSD as regulated financial infrastructure rather than just another tokenized dollar.
The rollout strengthens the broader Ripple ecosystem, but investors should keep the relationship precise. RLUSD is its own dollar-backed asset.
Coinbase support for RLUSD does not mean every transfer uses XRP, and a stronger stablecoin does not mechanically force demand into the XRP token.
The more defensible XRP angle is indirect. A successful RLUSD expands activity on XRP Ledger and gives developers another liquid dollar asset for payments and settlement.
That can improve the network’s usefulness without turning every RLUSD transaction into an XRP trade.
RLUSD still competes against much larger incumbents, especially USDT and USDC. Coinbase distribution removes an access barrier, while the Moody’s ratings make the token easier to evaluate inside existing institutional risk processes.
The next measure is whether users move meaningful balances and settlement activity onto the new rails.
