Stablecoin Payments Hit $482 Billion While Supply Barely Moves
• October 18, 2026 3:19 pm • CommentsThe stablecoin market barely grew this year. The money already inside it, however, started moving much faster.
Stablecoin payments reached $482 billion during the first nine months of 2026, up 45% from the same period last year, according to a new Allium report summarized by CoinDesk. The figures cover filtered payment activity rather than every raw blockchain transfer, giving the growth rate more relevance to actual commercial use.
That growth came while total stablecoin supply rose just 0.4% from the beginning of the year to roughly $305 billion at the end of September. The existing pool of digital dollars is changing hands more often, with business transfers, payroll and cross-border payouts emerging as major uses.
The transaction count tells the same story. Stablecoin payments rose 71% to more than 1 billion transactions through September, while the average payment fell from $544 to $462.
More transactions at a smaller average size point toward routine commercial use rather than a handful of giant treasury transfers.
September alone reached a monthly record of about $72 billion, while third-quarter payment value grew 51% from a year earlier. Allium’s filtered figures are designed to separate payment activity from raw on-chain transfers, wash activity and other movements that do not represent commerce.
Visa, Mastercard and Stripe are all pushing stablecoin products closer to ordinary business operations. The important change is the connection between on-chain dollars and existing systems for cards, accounts, payouts and bank withdrawals.
Visa Direct has moved stablecoin prefunding into commercial deployment, with Inyo Global serving as the first enabler. Cuy Sheffield, Visa’s head of crypto, highlighted the production launch directly.

The practical advantage is straightforward. A payment company can hold stablecoin liquidity before a payout is initiated, then move value across borders without waiting for every traditional banking step to line up first. The recipient can still receive familiar local currency at the other end.
Mastercard’s new infrastructure combines fiat and stablecoin accounts with cards, conversion and payout functions. Stripe is also developing card products that can draw from multiple currencies and stablecoin balances.
Each company is approaching the market differently, but all three are building the bridge between crypto settlement and normal commerce.
The most bullish part of the data may be the disconnect between activity and supply. A 45% jump in payment volume alongside nearly flat token supply means the same pool of stablecoins is doing more economic work.
That trend is visible across networks and consumer devices. Solana recently pointed to USDC cross-border payment support coming to Samsung Wallet, alongside a wider set of institutional developments.
The world’s largest phone maker is putting Solana in its wallet. Samsung Wallet is getting USDC cross-border payments, BNY opened SOL custody, Securitize brought U.S. stocks onchain, and blocks got 2x faster underneath.

Businesses appear to be the immediate winners. Cross-border suppliers, payroll operators and companies managing cash across several markets can use stablecoins as a settlement layer while keeping the customer-facing experience familiar.
Visa’s own business-payment data has also emphasized that stablecoins are increasingly functioning as financial infrastructure, particularly in commercial card programs and international money movement.
The market still has plenty to prove. Stablecoin card spending remains tiny next to conventional payment volume.
Regulatory, reserve and redemption risks remain. The direction of commercial adoption is still hard to miss.
Crypto’s most important adoption story may not be a new wave of speculative buyers. It may be the quiet conversion of stablecoins into back-end plumbing for payments people already make every day.
