Institutional vault holding a dollar stablecoin with ledger rails toward a separate gateway

Standard Chartered Brings Ripple’s RLUSD Into Bank Custody—But the Bigger LMAX Step Is Still Ahead

Standard Chartered has moved Ripple USD one step deeper into the traditional financial system.

The bank said Monday that institutional custody for RLUSD issued on the XRP Ledger is now live through its Dubai International Financial Centre branch. That branch is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority, giving eligible clients a bank-operated place to hold the stablecoin.

That is the completed part of the announcement. The more ambitious piece—a plan to let institutions use RLUSD held at Standard Chartered as collateral for certain products at LMAX Group—is still being built.

Custody first, collateral next.

Standard Chartered drew a clear line between what is available today and what may come next, identifying a live custody service through its DFSA-regulated DIFC branch and a separate collateral-mirroring project that still needs documentation, testing and approvals across the relevant jurisdictions before institutions can use bank-held RLUSD for agreed LMAX trading products.

The custody service is live. Eligible institutions can use the bank’s existing digital-asset infrastructure to safeguard RLUSD on XRPL.

Standard Chartered, Ripple and LMAX are separately working toward making RLUSD eligible collateral for agreed LMAX products.

The proposed structure is called collateral mirroring. Instead of moving the underlying RLUSD onto a trading venue, the value of the assets held at the bank would be reflected at LMAX.

In theory, that gives an institution access to trading and collateral-management functions while reducing the operational and counterparty risk that comes with transferring assets to an exchange.

That distinction matters. Crypto announcements often compress a live service and a future integration into one headline.

Here, the bank says final documentation, testing, applicable law, regulation, internal approvals and jurisdictional readiness still stand between the plan and a finished collateral product.

The live service operates through Standard Chartered’s DIFC branch in Dubai, while the proposed next phase would combine the bank’s custody infrastructure with Ripple’s stablecoin and LMAX’s institutional trading marketplace. No launch date for that collateral phase was announced.

Why this matters for RLUSD and XRP Ledger.

RLUSD is designed to hold a one-dollar value and is backed by segregated reserves of cash and cash equivalents. Ripple describes a regulated, institution-focused stablecoin with redemption rights and recurring reserve reporting.

The new custody option does not guarantee a wave of institutional demand, and it does not directly create buying pressure for XRP. What it does provide is infrastructure that large firms routinely require before they will hold or deploy a digital asset: regulated safekeeping, operational controls and a recognizable banking counterparty.

The planned LMAX connection would add another layer. A stablecoin that can remain with a regulated custodian while supporting trading activity elsewhere is more useful than one that must constantly be transferred between counterparties.

It could also make RLUSD more practical for treasury, settlement and collateral workflows that cannot tolerate loose custody arrangements.

CryptoSlate reported that RLUSD’s circulating value had climbed sharply during the quarter as Ripple pushed the stablecoin toward institutional markets. The report tied that growth to a broader effort to make RLUSD usable beyond simple transfers, including treasury, custody and trading infrastructure.

The Standard Chartered launch adds a regulated bank-custody layer to that expansion, but it does not prove institutions will immediately deploy large balances. The real test is whether clients begin using the live service and whether the planned collateral model clears its documentation, testing and approval gates.

For the XRP Ledger, the announcement is a concrete piece of financial plumbing. The custody rail exists today.

The collateral rail is the next thing to watch.
