Strategy Just Made a $334 Million Move Without Buying a Single Bitcoin
• August 17, 2026 11:07 am • CommentsStrategy did something last week that would have sounded strange at almost any earlier point in its Bitcoin era: It raised hundreds of millions of dollars, strengthened its balance sheet, and left its BTC stack completely untouched.
The company sold 3.46 million shares of MSTR common stock for $333.7 million during the week that ended August 16. But none of that money went toward another Bitcoin purchase.
Instead, Strategy directed the proceeds toward its preferred stock, dividend obligations, and a rapidly growing cash reserve.

According to Strategy’s announcement, the company used roughly $132.2 million to repurchase 1,388,720 shares of its variable-rate preferred stock, STRC. It committed another $52.4 million to STRC dividend payments.
The remaining centerpiece was a $150 million addition to the company’s U.S. dollar reserve. That lifted the reserve to $4.8 billion as of August 16, giving Strategy an estimated 2.8 years of coverage for preferred-stock dividends and interest on outstanding debt.
The company also reported that it still has $653 million available under its preferred-stock repurchase authorization and $1 billion under its MSTR common-stock repurchase program. In other words, this was not a one-off bill payment; it was a deliberate reshaping of the capital structure around the Bitcoin treasury.
That is a meaningful shift in emphasis. Strategy remains the world’s defining corporate Bitcoin holder, but this week’s move was about fortifying the machinery around that position rather than making the position itself larger.

CoinDesk reports that Strategy also set aside $52.4 million for STRC dividends. Its dollar reserve now stands at $4.8 billion, enough to cover an estimated 2.8 years of preferred-stock dividends and interest payments on outstanding debt.
That cash cushion matters because Strategy’s capital structure is no longer a simple two-part story of issuing common stock and buying Bitcoin. The company now has several preferred securities, recurring dividend commitments, and debt-service obligations wrapped around its enormous BTC treasury.
Keeping more dollars on hand gives Strategy room to meet those obligations without becoming a forced seller of Bitcoin during a difficult market. It also allows Executive Chairman Michael Saylor and his team to separate near-term financing needs from their long-term Bitcoin thesis.
The Bitcoin numbers remain staggering. Strategy held 840,447 BTC as of August 16, acquired for an aggregate $63.36 billion at an average cost of $75,385 per coin, including fees and expenses.
The company reported no Bitcoin purchases or sales during the week.

Strategy still has substantial flexibility. The company has $653 million remaining under its preferred-stock repurchase authorization and $1 billion available under its MSTR common-stock repurchase program.
Nothing in this filing suggests Strategy has lost conviction. The company is putting more distance between its Bitcoin and the bills attached to the financial structure built around it.
That may lack the drama of another giant BTC buy. But if the goal is to hold through volatility without touching the core stack, a deeper cash reserve could prove every bit as important.
