Switzerland Opens Its First Direct Bitcoin ETF to Retail Investors
• October 20, 2026 3:18 pm • CommentsSwitzerland has opened a new regulated door to Bitcoin for ordinary investors.
The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, better known as FINMA, announced Tuesday that it approved the country’s first public fund that invests directly in Bitcoin and can be offered to retail investors. That is a different structure from the crypto exchange-traded products Swiss markets have hosted for years.
The distinction matters. This is a Swiss collective investment fund built to hold Bitcoin directly rather than a debt security that tracks its price.
FINMA classified it as an “other fund for alternative investments” carrying particular risk. The regulator granted an exception to ordinary diversification rules because Bitcoin has a relatively long trading history and deep liquidity compared with other cryptocurrencies.
The approval immediately drew attention across the Bitcoin market.

Retail access comes with unusually direct warnings.
FINMA did not frame the decision as an endorsement of Bitcoin’s price. Its announcement repeatedly stressed that Bitcoin remains highly volatile and that investors can lose a substantial amount of their capital.
Supervised firms involved with the product must reduce operational and custody risks, follow Switzerland’s financial-services conduct rules at the point of sale, and explain volatility and loss risks clearly in fund documents. They also must pay particular attention to whether the product is appropriate or suitable for a customer.
That balance is the real story: Switzerland is allowing broader access, but it is doing so inside a fund wrapper with explicit custody, disclosure, and sales-practice obligations. The regulator also said other providers have filed or announced plans for Bitcoin ETF applications, suggesting this may be the start of a category rather than a one-off approval.

What investors are actually getting.
BIT Asset Management identified the approved product as the Bitcoin Fund ETF, ticker BBIT. The firm said the fund is designed to track Bitcoin by holding the asset directly, and it expects trading to begin in November on the SIX Swiss Exchange.
That direct-holding structure gives investors Bitcoin price exposure through a conventional securities account without requiring them to manage private keys. It also shifts custody and operational responsibilities to regulated institutions—precisely the areas FINMA highlighted in its safeguards.
Switzerland already has a mature market for crypto-linked products, so the headline is not that Bitcoin has suddenly arrived there. The important change is that a directly held Bitcoin fund has crossed into a retail-accessible Swiss fund structure.
If competing applications follow, ordinary brokerage access to Bitcoin could become a much more standard part of the country’s investment landscape.
Bitcoin remains risky; FINMA made that plain. The approval establishes a regulated path that did not exist before.
For a financial center known for careful rules and private wealth management, that is a meaningful step.
