Tether Backs AIsa’s Bid to Make Stablecoins the Payment Rail for AI Agents
• October 18, 2026 7:32 am • CommentsTether is placing a new bet on the idea that tomorrow’s biggest stablecoin users may not be people at all. They may be AI agents buying data, software and computing power one small transaction at a time.
Tether Capital has made a strategic investment in AIsa, a San Francisco company building payment and resource-access infrastructure for enterprise AI agents. The size of Tether’s individual investment was not disclosed.
In its investment announcement, Tether described a familiar bottleneck: an AI agent can analyze information and run workflows, but paid data or software often still requires a person to open an account, approve a subscription and connect another vendor. AIsa is trying to collapse that process into one governed access layer.
The system is designed around usage-based purchasing. An agent can locate a resource, obtain access and pay for the amount it actually uses instead of forcing the business to maintain a separate subscription and billing relationship with every data, model or software provider.
Tether says those purchases can be billed in fiat or stablecoins, giving enterprises a conventional option while also testing programmable dollar tokens as an always-on settlement rail. The company highlighted AIsa’s controls around permissions, budgets and auditability as essential parts of that model, because autonomous buying only works when the business can define what each agent may purchase and trace the resulting expense.
The announcement also points to AIsa’s reported operating scale: more than 250,000 agents, over 100 million transactions and access to more than 5,000 APIs, skills and models.
The companies have not disclosed how many of those transactions carried economic value. That missing number matters, but the reported activity still explains why Tether sees the platform as more than a laboratory demonstration.
Tether Invests in AIsa to Expand Its Push into AI-Powered Payments and Programmable Money

The investment is really about machine-to-machine commerce.
AIsa says developers can connect agents to models, data, APIs, software tools and computing resources through a single interface. Instead of maintaining a separate contract or subscription for every service, a business can pay for individual calls as the agent uses them.
The platform supports fiat and stablecoin billing. Autonomous software is likely to make many small, fast purchases that do not fit comfortably through traditional card or bank-payment workflows.
A stablecoin can settle around the clock, move across borders and follow programmable rules without forcing an agent to hold a conventional corporate card.
Giving software a wallet is easier than deciding what that wallet is allowed to do across paid data sources, outside models, APIs and computing vendors. AIsa’s company announcement emphasizes resource permissions, per-agent budgets, spending limits, approval workflows, usage metering, billing records and audit trails that connect each purchase to the agent that made it.
Those controls separate useful automation from an agent that quietly runs up a bill while chasing one more data source.
AIsa says the seed extension added Tether and HIVEN as strategic investors and pushed total funding above $9 million. The company did not disclose the extension’s individual size or valuation.
Earlier backers include Alibaba, Tribe Capital, Sumitomo Corporation, Draper Associates and Saison Capital. AIsa says the new money will help expand its resource network, strengthen enterprise governance and scale transaction infrastructure.
The company also reports pilot programs in financial intelligence, market research, supply-chain management and commerce. It has not named the participating enterprises or disclosed contract values, so those deployments remain company-described rather than independently measured.
AIsa’s stated goal is to let agents discover, access and pay for outside resources while keeping every purchase inside enterprise-defined controls. That makes governance part of the product, not an optional layer added after deployment.
We just raised a total of $9M+ to give every AI agent a wallet.

AIsa says its network already has meaningful scale.
Tether says AIsa reports more than 250,000 agents operating on the platform, over 100 million transactions processed and access to more than 5,000 APIs, skills and models. Those are company-reported figures, and neither announcement breaks out how many transactions carried real economic value or what share settled in stablecoins.
A large volume of low-cost API calls can demonstrate technical use without proving stablecoins have become the preferred payment rail.
The investment gives Tether a direct seat near that experiment. Actual customer behavior can show whether autonomous software chooses dollar tokens over fiat billing when both are available.
AIsa says the seed extension brought total funding above $9 million, with Tether and HIVEN joining earlier backers including Alibaba, Tribe Capital, Sumitomo Corporation, Draper Associates and Saison Capital. The company also says it has begun enterprise pilots in financial intelligence, market research, supply-chain management and commerce, though it did not name the participating companies.
For Tether, the deal extends a broader push beyond issuing USDT. The company has invested in AI, robotics, energy and other infrastructure businesses where programmable money could become part of the operating layer.
The practical test is whether agents can discover a resource, understand its price, stay inside a clear budget and produce an auditable result. Success would give stablecoins a real machine-payments use case.
If the controls lag behind the automation, the wallet becomes another risk surface. Tether is betting AIsa can build both sides at once.
