XRP payment rails connecting an autonomous AI agent to online service nodes

XRP Ledger Adds Stripe-Tempo Machine Payments for AI Agents

RippleX has moved the XRP Ledger deeper into the emerging market for payments made by software, not people.

Version 1.1 of the XRPL AI Starter Kit adds support for the Machine Payments Protocol, or MPP, developed by Stripe and Tempo. It also connects XRPL to the Open Wallet Standard, a common layer designed to let autonomous software work with wallets across multiple blockchains.

The practical pitch is simple: an AI agent that needs data, computing power or another online service can receive a price, authorize a payment and get the resource without stopping for a conventional checkout flow.

RippleX Developers says the new kit supports one-time MPP payments in XRP and ledger-issued assets. It also supports longer sessions through XRP Payment Channels, where an agent can keep signing updated payment vouchers and the service provider settles the accumulated amount on-chain at the end.

That session model could matter more than a single purchase. A software agent may need to pay for hundreds of small API calls during one task.

Opening and closing one channel can be cheaper and cleaner than recording every tiny payment separately.

The same release adds a local testing tool, wallet-policy controls and reference code for the payment handshake. Those pieces give developers a way to test the flow before putting an agent in charge of real funds.

RippleX product chief Jazzi Cooper framed the update as a multi-standard strategy rather than a bet on one winner.

XRPL already supported x402, another HTTP-based payment standard. Adding MPP gives developers another route while keeping XRP and Ripple’s dollar-backed RLUSD in the conversation regardless of which agent-payment framework gains wider adoption.

Stripe describes MPP as payment-method agnostic. Ripple is not getting an exclusive lane; it is competing to make XRPL one of several settlement options inside an open standard.

There are limits. Session payments currently use XRP.

Extending the same channel mechanics to assets such as RLUSD depends on proposed ledger changes. The software is also still in beta.

CoinDesk noted that Ripple has not named commercial users for the MPP integration or disclosed payment volume. This is infrastructure becoming available, not proof that large-scale adoption has already arrived.

Still, the update gives XRP a concrete role in a fast-developing market. Winning payment rails will need low costs, predictable settlement and wallet controls that do not hand raw private keys to software.

RippleX is trying to make sure XRPL is ready before that market settles on its defaults.
