Bitcoin’s $81,000 Line Faces a New Test as Oil Surges
• October 23, 2026 7:10 pm • CommentsBitcoin is back at a level that has become far more important than the round number makes it look.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency slipped below $81,000 during Friday’s U.S. trading session as stocks weakened and oil moved sharply higher. The move briefly took Bitcoin to about $80,988, putting the market on the wrong side of its 50-day moving average at roughly $81,781.
That leaves the immediate question simple: Can buyers reclaim the trend line before this pullback turns into a deeper support test?
Cointelegraph reported that Brent crude climbed to around $116 per barrel, its highest level since March 19, while Bitcoin and U.S. equities moved lower. Expensive oil can revive inflation concerns, complicate the interest-rate outlook and drain enthusiasm from risk assets.
Bitcoin may trade around the clock, but it does not operate outside that broader financial weather.
The price action matters because Bitcoin was testing both a familiar round number and a widely watched medium-term trend gauge. When those levels sit close together, traders, algorithms and leveraged positions all focus on the same zone.
Keith Alan, co-founder of Material Indicators, said bulls were fighting to recover the 50-day simple moving average after a daily close below it. His near-term map was clear: if buyers cannot reclaim that line, the $78,000 to $80,000 area could come into play as the next support test.

That does not make $78,000 inevitable. The market still needs to prove that Friday’s dip was a temporary risk-off move rather than the start of a larger breakdown.
A firm recovery above the 50-day average would give bulls a cleaner argument that support held. Repeated failures below it would hand momentum to sellers.
The broader backdrop is not uniformly bearish. Farside Investors reported $524.8 million in net inflows for U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds on October 21.
BlackRock’s IBIT and Fidelity’s FBTC accounted for most of that day’s total, showing that substantial institutional demand was still present earlier in the week.

BITB: 19.2

One strong inflow day cannot cancel out a macro shock, and ETF flows can reverse quickly. Still, it is an important counterweight to the idea that every buyer has disappeared.
If oil settles down and equities stabilize, that underlying demand could help Bitcoin reclaim the trend line faster than traders positioned for a clean breakdown expect.
The next daily closes matter more than an intraday print. Bitcoin holding above $81,000 and recovering the 50-day average would keep the recent range intact.
Losing both levels would put the upper-$70,000s back on the board and likely increase volatility across the rest of the crypto market.
For now, Bitcoin is caught between two real forces: a sudden oil-driven risk shock and continued evidence that large pools of capital still want exposure. The winner will not be decided by a headline. It will be decided by whether buyers can take back the line they just lost.
