Bitcoin Breaks Below $80,000 as Middle East Risk Hits Weekend Trading

Bitcoin slipped below $80,000 on Saturday as a new burst of geopolitical risk collided with the thin liquidity of weekend crypto trading.

The move was not confined to Bitcoin. Ether, XRP and Solana all fell harder, turning what began as pressure on the market leader into a broad retreat across the largest digital assets.

CoinDesk reported that Bitcoin traded near $79,700, down 2.2% over 24 hours and at its weakest point in more than a month. Ether, XRP and Solana were down roughly 3% to 4% as traders reacted to reports that the United States was moving personnel out of embassies and military facilities across the Middle East amid concerns about possible Iranian attacks.

The timing matters. Weekend crypto markets can move sharply because fewer large desks are active and order books are often thinner than they are during the regular business week.

The geopolitical threat drove the selling. Thin liquidity gave that selling more room to run.

Bitcoin had already been struggling to hold its 50-day moving average before the latest geopolitical headlines. Once the market lost that technical level, the area between $78,000 and $80,000 became the obvious near-term test.

Keith Alan highlighted that setup Friday, noting that a failure to reclaim the 50-day average could bring that support zone into play.

The first question is whether buyers defend that zone quickly. A fast recovery above $80,000 would suggest that the weekend break was driven more by temporary risk reduction than by a deeper shift in demand.

Continued selling below it would raise the odds of a longer reset.

That distinction is especially important because the latest drop did not arrive after a long stretch of vanishing institutional interest.

Farside Investors reported $524.8 million in net inflows for U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds on October 21. BlackRock’s IBIT and Fidelity’s FBTC accounted for most of that total.

One strong inflow day does not guarantee support at any particular price. It does show that the market entered the weekend with a meaningful institutional demand channel still functioning.

The next ETF-flow readings will help show whether larger buyers view the break as an opportunity or choose to wait for geopolitical conditions to settle.

For XRP and Solana, the sharper percentage declines are another reminder that risk usually travels outward from Bitcoin. When the largest crypto asset loses an important level, traders often cut positions in more volatile assets first, even when there is no project-specific bad news.

Three signals now matter most: whether Bitcoin can recover $80,000, whether the $78,000 area attracts durable buying, and whether the next round of geopolitical reporting escalates or cools the risk.

President Trump had already warned that fighting with Iran could re-escalate after the November midterm elections. Reports of accelerated evacuations turned that longer-range threat into an immediate market concern.

Crypto trades continuously, so it became one of the first major markets to price that shift.

The weekend decline is serious, but it is not yet a verdict on the broader Bitcoin cycle. It is a test of how much demand remains when technical weakness and an external shock arrive at the same time.

The response around $78,000 to $80,000 should tell us much more than the first wave of selling did.
