Bitcoin and recurring payment tokens balanced on a financial scale

Strategy and Strive Face the Dividend Bill Behind Their Bitcoin Buying

Strategy and Strive have turned preferred stock into a powerful Bitcoin-buying machine. The catch is that every new share creates another cash obligation that does not disappear when Bitcoin has a bad month.

That tension is becoming large enough to matter for the Bitcoin market itself.

CoinDesk reported that preferred-stock offerings have financed nearly 136,000 Bitcoin purchases since the products began appearing in 2025. Fidelity Digital Assets calculated 135,979 BTC through October 5, more than half of one percent of Bitcoin’s fixed maximum supply.

The financing model reaches investors who want income but may not want to own Bitcoin or a spot Bitcoin ETF. Companies sell perpetual preferred shares, promise recurring dividends, and use the proceeds to add Bitcoin to their treasuries.

Strategy’s own description makes the pitch plain: STRC is the income-oriented “digital credit” layer, Bitcoin is the reserve asset, and MSTR is the common equity.

It is an elegant structure when capital is easy to raise and the preferred shares trade near their intended value. The company gets fresh money for Bitcoin, while income buyers receive a security designed around cash distributions.

But the dividend bill grows with the offering. Unlike a spot ETF, which simply buys or sells Bitcoin as investor money moves in or out, a preferred share leaves the issuer with an ongoing payout commitment.

Strategy is the market’s biggest test case. It has five preferred classes, and analysts cited in the report estimated that STRC alone raised $7.5 billion during 2026 through late July.

That capital helped support Bitcoin demand. It also created a recurring cost that must be paid from cash, new financing, asset sales, or some combination of the three.

Strive shows the same tradeoff in a different form. Its SATA preferred shares pay distributions every trading day, turning the obligation into a highly visible operating rhythm.

The October 23 payment was Strive’s 97th consecutive SATA dividend. Strive said the $0.0516 daily distribution represented an annualized $13 per share and a 13.3% effective yield at the latest close.

Those yields are the attraction, but they also show why the products cannot be treated as free money for Bitcoin purchases. The higher the promised income, the more cash the issuer must continually find.

The pressure becomes sharper when a preferred share trades below par. Fresh issuance becomes less attractive, while a buyback can look like the better use of cash.

Strategy recently spent $193 million repurchasing STRC while buying only 267 Bitcoin, according to figures cited in the report. Buybacks can lower future dividend costs, but every dollar used that way is a dollar not used to buy Bitcoin today.

Fidelity estimates the Bitcoin-focused preferred market at roughly $12 billion, tiny beside the global fixed-income market. That leaves room for the model to grow if income investors remain interested.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs are still the larger demand channel, with approximately $57 billion in cumulative net inflows and about $106 billion in assets. Preferred shares serve a different buyer: someone seeking yield instead of direct Bitcoin exposure.

The model works best when confidence reinforces itself. Strong preferred-share demand funds more Bitcoin purchases, those purchases support the treasury story, and the story helps keep financing available.

The reverse can happen too. If prices weaken, financing becomes harder just as dividends and buybacks consume more cash.

That does not mean Strategy or Strive must stop buying Bitcoin. It means investors should watch the funding engine as closely as the size of the Bitcoin stack, because the dividend bill is now part of the crypto demand equation.
