Germany’s Sparkassen Begin Putting Bitcoin and XRP Inside the Banking App
• October 19, 2026 7:19 pm • CommentsGermany’s Sparkassen network has started bringing crypto trading into the same banking app millions of customers already use, with Bitcoin and XRP among the first five supported assets.
According to CryptoTicker, the first participating savings banks activated the service on October 19 inside App Sparkasse. Customers at those banks can buy and sell Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and Polygon without moving to a separate crypto exchange.
The rollout is local rather than simultaneous. Each Sparkasse decides when to turn the feature on, while DekaBank provides the execution-only trading infrastructure behind it.
The German Savings Banks Association expects roughly 30 to 40 more institutions to activate the service each month. More than 230 local savings banks have expressed interest in joining.
Customer assets are held through centralized custody, and the service restricts transfers instead of offering unrestricted withdrawals to self-hosted wallets. The initial design therefore prioritizes bank-app access and regulated custody over direct on-chain control.

Crypto is moving into a familiar banking habit.
Sparkassen are deeply embedded in Germany’s retail banking system. Putting digital assets inside an existing bank app removes one of the biggest practical barriers for mainstream customers.
Customers can gain exposure without opening and funding a separate exchange account.
The German Savings Banks Association expects roughly 30 to 40 additional institutions to join each month, according to the report. More than 230 local banks have expressed interest, suggesting this could expand far beyond the initial group.
XRP’s inclusion is especially notable. Banks often begin with Bitcoin and Ether, then add other assets later.
Launching with XRP, Solana and Polygon gives customers broader large-cap exposure from day one and puts XRP alongside the market’s two dominant assets in a highly traditional financial channel.

Convenience comes with a closed custody model.
The service is designed for trading inside the banking environment, not for unrestricted on-chain use. Customer assets are held through centralized custody, and transfers are restricted rather than freely withdrawable to any self-hosted wallet.
That tradeoff will matter to experienced crypto users who value direct possession. But for customers who mainly want price exposure through an institution they already trust, the closed model may feel more like a feature than a limitation.
The launch shows how the next wave of adoption may look less like a dramatic break with banking and more like a new button inside the bank app. If the monthly rollout reaches the projected pace, Bitcoin and XRP access could become routine across a large part of Germany’s savings-bank system.
