XRP Ledger’s Zero-XRP Wallet Proposal Could Remove a Major Stablecoin Onboarding Toll
• October 28, 2026 3:09 pm • CommentsXRP Ledger developers are testing a change that could let a new wallet begin with zero XRP while still satisfying the network’s reserve rules.
The proposal is called SponsoredAccountCreate. CoinDesk says an existing account would create the new wallet and carry its reserve obligation.
The user would keep control of the new wallet’s keys, while the sponsor—not the user—would bear the XRP cost. The code was submitted October 15 and remains under review, with two automated review findings still unresolved.
The XRP Ledger currently requires a one-XRP base reserve for an active account. A payment company trying to open 100,000 wallets would therefore need to lock 100,000 XRP before those customers could do anything.
The proposed system shifts that burden without eliminating it. The network would still protect itself against unlimited empty accounts; the reserve would simply sit with the sponsor.
The broader Sponsored Fees and Reserves design can also let a sponsor cover transaction fees without taking custody of a user’s private keys.
Aviva Investors recently announced a tokenized share class of its roughly £22 billion sterling liquidity fund on XRPL, another sign that institutions want the network’s payment and asset rails.

The zero-XRP wallet idea is especially relevant for stablecoin payments and automated software. Stripe-owned Privy said this month that it is bringing programmable wallet infrastructure to XRPL so developers can build payment and agentic-commerce experiences using XRP, RLUSD and other assets.
If an application only wants a customer to hold RLUSD, forcing that customer to acquire XRP first adds friction before the product can even begin.
Ripple’s newly approved national trust bank gives RLUSD another institutional support point. CEO Brad Garlinghouse said the federally supervised platform will support RLUSD and enterprise digital-asset custody.
Big news heading into @RippleSwell: the @USOCC has granted final approval for Ripple National Trust Bank.
This gives Ripple a federally supervised platform to support $RLUSD and provide digital asset custody to enterprises.

The underlying sponsorship amendment still needs validator support before mainnet activation. CoinDesk counted 11 votes as of October 19, short of the 29 required.
The proposal will not boost XRP demand overnight. Its value is practical: removing an onboarding toll that becomes expensive at scale.
If validators approve it, payment apps could hide more blockchain plumbing from users while the ledger keeps its anti-spam economics intact.
